As fall nears and temps start dropping you hear it from skincare pros all over.. “its peel season!” but WTF is peel season and should it be something you’re participating in? (spoiler alert: yes, you absolutely should).

The coveted peel season is the ideal time of the year where skincare professionals are able to target specific concerns with a little more oomph and the peace of mind knowing your skin wont be damaged further due to too much sun exposure (aka summer) and not enough sun protection. (As much as I like to believe all my clients liberally apply sunscreen and cover with hats when in the sun for extended periods, the reality is that sun gets us- all of us!) Regardless the type of peel that you get, your top layer of dead skin cells will be removed and new, radiant looking skin will appear in its place. Because this skin is so fresh it is more susceptible to being damaged by the sun, even if you aren’t laying out pool side. The UV rays in the cooler months are not as powerful which make it an ideal time to get rid of that dead layer + the sun spots you may have accumulated over the summer.

The beauty of a peel is that there are different types for almost all skin concerns and they don’t all make you hide indoors for a week following your treatment. When peels were first introduced they were known to do exactly as they sound.. flake your skin off and leave you looking like a snake for days. Are there still peels that do that? Certainly. Are those types bad for you? Not necessarily. BUT there are so many options now that aren’t going to give you intense downtime while still giving you the results you desire!

p.s. My personal favorite treatment room peel specifically for sun damaged or discolored skin is the Cosmedix Pomegranate Peel. This gentle, antioxidant rich exfoliating treatment leaves skin soft, smooth, radiant, renewed and glowing! The addition of antioxidants make it a superior choice; instead of simply exfoliating the skin with acids, the pomegranate peel also infuses the skin with antioxidants to help nourish and protect the skin.

So there you have it, the desirable season lives up to the claims and is finally upon us. HAPPY PEELING!
